At Decatur Church of Christ, we strive to be a warm and welcoming community dedicated to growing in faith, serving others, and sharing God’s love. Whether you’re new to the church or looking for a place to call home, we invite you to learn more about us and plan a visit!
Our worship services are on Sundays at 10 am and 5 pm. Bible study is at 9 am on Sundays and 6:30 pm on Wednesdays. We'd love to have you join us!
On a typical Sunday, we start with Bible class at 9 am—kids go to The Bridge, teens join the Youth Group, and adults attend their classes. Around 9:50, we all gather in the auditorium for worship, where we sing, pray, and learn from God’s word together.
“Church of Christ” refers to a group of Christians that seek to follow the teachings and practices found in the New Testament as closely as possible. We believe in adhering strictly to the Bible and strive to be just Christians, without adding or changing doctrines. Our focus is on being part of the church that Jesus established, rather than following man-made traditions or denominations. We’re dedicated to living out the faith as outlined in Scripture and welcoming everyone to join us in this commitment.
Getting more connected with our church is easy! You can start by joining us for our Sunday Bible class and worship. We also have various groups and activities throughout the year where you can meet others and get involved. If you still aren’t sure, feel free to set up a Bible Study with one of our members or visit our welcome area in our lobby.
The Lord’s Supper is a way for Christians to remember and honor Jesus’s sacrifice. Every Sunday, we share bread and fruit of the vine as Jesus instructed, symbolizing His body and blood given for us. It’s a weekly reminder of His love and the incredible sacrifice He made for our salvation.
We don’t use instruments during worship because we aim to follow the principle of authority that is central to the Bible. From the beginning, God has emphasized the importance of acting according to His will, rather than our ideas. In Colossians 3:17, Paul instructs us to do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, meaning we should act only with his approval. Just as God was specific about how sacrifices were to be made in the Old Testament, the New Testament directs us to worship through singing, not playing instruments (Colossians 3:16; Ephesians 5:19). So, we strive to respect this guidance and worship in a way that aligns with the authority of Christ.
Becoming a Christian is about understanding a few key things rather than knowing every detail of the Bible. First, you need to recognize that everyone has sinned and needs forgiveness (Romans 3:10, 23; 1 John 1:8). Second, you should know that Jesus is the Son of God who died and was resurrected to save us from our sins (Luke 19:10; John 3:16; Romans 5:6-8). Finally, you need to be ready to take action by believing in Jesus (John 8:24), repenting of your sins (Luke 13:3, 5), confessing Him as Lord (Romans 10:10), and being baptized for the remission of your sins (Acts 2:38). You don’t need to know everything before you start—just these essential steps. After becoming a Christian, you'll continue to grow and learn more about your faith (2 Peter 3:18; Hebrews 5:12; 1 Peter 3:15).
Visiting a new church can feel a bit unfamiliar, but we’re here to help make your experience as smooth as possible. Let us know when you’re coming and if you have any questions, so we can make sure you feel welcomed!
Decatur Church of Christ is blessed with dedicated and humble servants of Christ who embody the spirit of love and service. Get to know them!
As a congregation, we are growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our aim: to lift up Jesus as together we are changed from "one degree of glory to another."
Five Acts of Worship Described in God’s Word:
The first Christians observed the Lord’s supper, the communion of the body (the bread) and the blood (fruit of the vine) of Christ (1 Cor. 10:16) during the worship service. They were to eat in remembrance of Jesus’s death on the cross for mankind’s sins. (Mat. 26:26-28; 1 Cor. 11:23-28). How often do we observe the Lord’s supper? We follow the example of Paul and the other early Christians, who came together on the first day of the week steadfastly (Acts 20:7; Acts 2:42)
Also, on the first day of the week the disciples were commanded to give back to God as they had been blessed by Him (1 Cor. 16:1-2) for the work of the church. They gave willingly and cheerfully (2 Cor. 9:1-7). We follow their divine example.
We know from Acts 20:7 that they had preaching during their worship services in which God’s word should be preached (2 Tim. 4:1-5). We have preaching at our worship services just as they did, teaching God’s word and only His word (2 Tim. 3:14-17; Gal 1:8-9)
God speaks to us through His word (2 Tim. 3:16-17) We speak to Him by praying through his Son Jesus Christ (Eph. 5:20; Col. 3:17). The first disciples prayed when they met together (Acts 2:42). As the Lord commands (1 Tim. 2:1-5; 1 Thes. 5:17), so we do.
We also sing praises to God when we meet together as God has commanded (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16). Whatever one does in worship, it must be done only as authorized by the Lord (Col. 3:17), in His name (by His authority) and must be done as His Word directs (John 4:24). Jesus and His apostles sang (Mat. 26:30, Mark 14:26). In the New Testament, only singing (without mechanical instruments) is ever mentioned in the worship of the church (Acts 16:25; Rom. 15:19; 1 Cor. 14:15; Heb. 2:12; Heb. 13:15; James 5:13). For almost 1000 years from the time of Christ, singing was done without the instrument, “A Capella” or “as in the chapel”. God’s word has not changed since the first century, so we continue to sing without musical instruments (Acts 17:24-25) as directed by His word (Rom. 14:23).
